The Complexity of Angles Will be Revealed!

This week in math, students will be able to answer the following lesson essential question about angles:

How Can the Properties of Angles be Used to Solve Multi-Step Problems?

We will complete the following activities while we go through our journey of discovery on angles:

It looks to be another fun an exciting week learning about Angles!!

Top 9 Constant of Proportionality Fliers by Students

On Thursday of last week and again today, students worked on a website called SMORES and created fliers explaining the concept of Constant of Proportionality. Here are the top 9 fliers from the activity (in no certain order):

  1. Everything you need to know at the push of a button!
  2. Learn how to solve–Includes a practice question!
  3. Finding constant of proportionality
  4. This is the way we do it!
  5. Steps to finding COP
  6. Learn to Solve Constant of Proportionalities
  7. An Encouraging COP Flier
  8. Constant of Proportionality with Real World Significance
  9. This is how you do it! (Contains a video link)

These students have all done a fantastic job of demonstrating what the Constant of Proportionality is all about!

Enjoy!

This Week in Math: All About Percents

This week, students will take a look at North Carolina Common Cores Standard 7.RP.3: Use proportional relationships to solve multistep ratio and percent problems (examples: simple interest, tax, markups and markdowns, gratuities, commissions, fees, percent increase and decrease, and percent error).

Monday: Students take a pre-assessment on percents to determine their current level of understanding of percent. Additionally, they complete a foldable on conversations between decimals, fractions, and percents and watch a video on Learnzillion on using a double number line to find percent of a number.

Tuesday: Students learn how percents are related to proportions and take notes on using proportional reasoning to determine the part, the whole, or the percent in a percent problem. Online, they complete their fliers from last week discussing Constant of Proportionality and play a percent Kahoot!

Wednesday: Students learn about how to find percent using the percent equation as a whole group, apply either the equation or proportion model to finding percent increase or decrease, then break into stations based upon their pre-assessments from Monday. Some students will work on calculating percents using visual aids while others will analyze a comic strip and apply their knowledge of percent problems to the comic strip.

Thursday: Students will practice more with finding percent increase and decrease, then view sales papers from Walgreens to see how percents are used in the real world. They will go online to create their own sales paper with markdowns and discounts.

Friday: Students will begin class by creating flow charts on finding percent increase and decrease, then will complete the Restaurant Madness activity to demonstrate their knowledge of the concepts learned throughout the week. This will be used as a project/test grade, but students will work in partners to complete the activity.

Assessing Your Knowledge

In an effort to keep track of standards where students might need extra support, I have set up an online assessment. This assessment is to be completed in class and without a calculator.

Go to the link below and follow the instructions in order to take the assessments (there are three of them):

Moby Max

Students can now get on Moby Max (www.mobymax.com/nc919 to practice math skills. Their accounts are set up with the same username and password they use to sign on to the computers at school.

If you need help explaining topics to your child, this book  is fantastic. You may also use Khan Academy.
